Jackson State Tigers Football History: SWAC Titles and Hall of Famers
Share
Jackson State football has one of the deepest trophy cases in HBCU sports. According to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, the Tigers have won 16 SWAC titles and three Black College National Championships, and the program has sent more than one player to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This overview covers the titles, the Mississippi running back who became the face of the school, and a few names on the current roster.
A Program Measured in Championships
The SWAC record book is the clearest way to read Jackson State's history. Sixteen conference crowns represent a long run of league success for the Tigers, and the three Black College National Championships carry that success beyond the conference standings.
The conference also points to the program's pro pipeline. Offensive tackle Jackie Slater is one of the Jackson State players enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a reminder that the Tigers produced linemen as well as ball carriers.
Walter Payton's Years in Jackson
Walter Payton came out of Columbia, Mississippi, and starred at Jackson State from 1971 to 1974. The National Football Foundation lists his college totals as 464 points and 3,563 rushing yards, numbers that explain why his name still comes up first when people talk about Tigers football.
His final two seasons stand out. In 1973 and 1974 he made every All-American team picked for college division or Division I-AA teams, and he was voted Black College Player of the Year in both of those seasons. Jackson State's athletics department adds that he was a three-time Black College All-American and a two-time FCS All-American during his time on campus.
The College Football Hall of Fame inducted Payton in 1996, a fitting honor for a back whose Tigers years produced two straight seasons of All-American selections.
The Current Tigers
The present roster keeps the story moving. JaCobian Morgan wears No. 15 and is listed by Jackson State as a graduate-student quarterback, and his name sits beside other current Tigers on jersey listings tied to the 2025 season.
2025 Vapor Jersey Lines for Jackson State
For readers tracking what the 2025 designs look like, TeeFashionStar's Jackson State Tigers category lists 35 items. The core piece is a 2025 Gold Vapor Limited jersey with a player menu and four styles: Alternate, Black Gold, Black Limited and White Gold. Most of the 2025 Vapor listings use those same four colors, and a V2 version also appears in Navy and Navy Alternate.
Player listings on that page include Jackie Slater with #78, plus current names such as Jared Lockhart, Ja'Naylon Dupree and Ahmad Miller; jerseys on that page also carry #15 for JaCobian Morgan, matching his roster number. A custom 2025 Gold Vapor option rounds out the set.
Taken together, the conference titles, the HBCU national championships and the Hall of Fame names give Jackson State a history that reaches well beyond a single era. The 2025 roster now adds its own chapter to that record in Jackson.
